Safe Towing starts with a clear view.
In response to the alarming statistic that two-thirds of road deaths in Australia occur on rural roads, a new national RV road safety campaign has been launched to address this critical issue. Spearheaded by Madventure in collaboration with CMCA, rvSafe, and the Australian Government, this campaign aims to enhance road safety for RV drivers and reduce fatalities on our roads.
With over 90% of camping trips enjoyed in rural areas and over 840,000 registered RVs in Australia (excluding 4x4s and SUVs), the need for increased road safety awareness is urgent. The campaign seeks to address the gap in RV safety education and to ensure that all Australians, regardless of their RV experience, are well-informed and prepared for safe travel.
Campaign highlights:
TV and YouTube series: Two of Australia’s top RV driver trainers challenge a caravanner, 4WDer and motorhome owner to see if they’re fit for Australia’s open roads and outback. This edu-tainment (education + entertainment) series features real-life RV safety scenarios and practical tips and will be broadcast nationally.
Social media and editorial coverage: The campaign will leverage social media platforms and editorial content on prominent websites such as RVDaily, Unsealed4x4, rvSafe, and CMCA to reach a broad audience and drive home the importance of RV road safety.
The campaign will run across multiple channels, including television, YouTube, social media, and major RV-related publications, to ensure that the message reaches RV enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike.
Tune into Channel 10 on Saturday, September 7th, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. to catch the first episode of Are You RV Safe.
The following episodes will air on the 14th, 21st & 28th September, and on the 5th, 12th & 26th October 2024.
Towing a caravan, fifth wheeler, horse float, boat or any trailer requires additional driving skills, knowledge, and safety precautions to normal driving, as well as compliance to additional relevant regulations. Federal and State regulations encompass licence requirements, trailer load distribution, rear-view mirrors and more.
Education and raising awareness of safe towing practices results in safer roads for everyone. A well set up vehicle and trailer or caravan results in a safer, more enjoyable and less stressful drive. We recommend that drivers undertake a towing course prior to heading out on the road for the first time.
For this reason, we’ve partnered with the following Driver Training providers that offer towing courses in your state.

Safe towing techniques are a must to ensure your safety, and the safety of other road users.
Towing courses provide essential skills and knowledge and are invaluable for beginners as well as experienced caravanners who could do with a little refresher, or an opportunity to break any bad habits developed over the years! It’s also a chance to brush up on any changes to legislation that may impact on you or your set up.
Towing courses cover topics such as reversing, negotiating tight spaces, emergency braking techniques, how to correctly load and secure your caravan, preventing trailer sway and weight distribution issues, as well as maintaining stability while towing.
Some of the most common crashes on our roads are caused by caravans merging or changing lanes and clipping the front of the vehicle travelling behind it. Enrolling in a towing course will provide the confidence in correctly adjusting mirrors, and using proper signalling procedures, to help reduce the risk of accidents.
Approach your next road trip with the confidence to handle any towing situation effectively and safely.

Do I need Towing Mirrors?
Drivers must be able to see down the full length of the vehicle and caravan or trailer. Some of the most common crashes on our roads are caused by caravans merging or changing lanes and clipping the front of the vehicle travelling behind it. Towing mirrors help prevent these crashes from occurring by providing the driver with visibility of the full length of the car and trailer.
Can I install a camera instead of Towing Mirrors?
Installing a camera on the rear of the caravan is not sufficient as they help provide visibility of traffic behind you, but do not replace the need for mirrors. If the driver cannot see down the full length of the vehicle and caravan or trailer, it may result in enforcement action being taken by Police.
Large convex single mirror reduces the objects that it reflects, allowing the driver to have a much wider field view and diminishing blind spots.
The Clearview™ Compact Towing Mirror is our smallest towing mirror which sits on a double slide and slides right back into the vehicle when not towing, just like an OEM mirror.
Rock Tamers® MudFlap System is an easy on and off way to protect your tow vehicle as well as whatever you are towing from hazardous rocks, mud, debris & road tar.
Rock Tamers® Mud Flaps protect your tow vehicle and towable by acting as a barrier and safely deflecting road debris away. When you’re on the move, an air whirl appears between your vehicle and your towable where road debris and particles get between the two. When the rear end of the tow vehicle is not protected, this debris can cause damage such as dents and chipped paint, to the vehicle. As your wheels rotate, rocks and debris get caught in the wheel tread which are then flung out, causing potential damage to the towable behind you.
Rock Tamers® are easily removable, and installation is quick and easy with no drilling required, making Rock Tamers® a convenient solution for when not towing full-time.
Replacing windscreens whilst travelling is expensive and a hassle – Installing Rock Tamers® Mud Flaps assists in protecting your tow vehicle, your towable and other cars on the road.
