Starting off with the essentials:

• Book in advance – to avoid disappointment and wait times, consider booking your resort passes, accommodation, lift passes, and hiring items in advance.
• Snow Chains – ensure your prepared to hire snow chains, or have a set handy to be fitted to your wheels. (P.S Snow chains are designed for being used at low speeds, using snow chains at speeds above 30-40km/h may damage your tyre.)
• Skill Level Assessment: Be realistic about your skiing or snowboarding skills and choose slopes that match your ability level.
• Communication Plan: Keep your friends and family informed of your plans and check-in regularly.

Clothing tips:

• Gloves – having a good set of gloves to keep your hands toasty is an essential. (There are a wide range of gloves available, some include touchscreen, water-resistance, and windproof.)
• Neckband – a neckband will ensure that your neck is kept warm and cosy! Some can be pulled up over your nose and mouth to ensure the cold breeze won’t compromise any of your warmth.
• Sunglasses – even though you’re tackling the cold conditions, sun glare is still a thing!
• Boots – having a set of waterproof shoes that will keep your feet nice and dry, as well as warm is a great thing to consider! Especially if you plan to be out in the wet or snow for a long period.
• Light Layers – consider wearing light layers which are easy to slip off. As much as thick layers keep you warm, if you’re participating in a lot of activity, you can get quite warm from movement. Wearing light layers will allow you to take off as many as you need, when needed especially if you’re travelling in the car.
• Pack spares – carrying a backup set of spare clothes to change into later isn’t a bad idea, you may get sweaty during all your snow fun!

Before you arrive consider these:

• Spare Tyre and Jack – there is nothing worse than getting a puncture in the middle of your road trip – let alone find out you aren’t able to use your Spare Tyre or Jack. Before heading off, check that both your Jack and Tyre are in good condition, suitable to be used on the roads.
• Vehicle Batteries – check that your battery is in good condition, batteries are known to drain and fail in cold conditions.
• Test your heating and ventilation – ensure your heating and ventilation functions operate, so you can easily demist the front and rear windscreen but also keep everyone toasty in cold conditions! If you have Heat function in your vehicle side mirrors (or Clearview Towing Mirrors!), it demists and defogs glass on the mirror in frosty, icy weather, working off the same de-mist system as the vehicle. Frost and ice will melt away from glass when turned on!
• Diesel Vehicles – if you have a diesel vehicle, be aware that ordinary diesel can thicken in sub-zero temperatures and freeze.
• Vehicle Lights – check that all your lights are operating on your car, this includes headlights, taillights, indicators, and fog lights to ensure you can see whilst traveling on roads and so others can see you. – Avoid using your high beams.
• Clear Snow off your car – Ensure your car is fully clear of any snow or ice, including your roof, windscreen, windows and side mirrors before driving.

Other handy things

• Lip Balm – a great thing to carry in your pocket, nothing is worse than dry lips, or peeling lips!
• First Aid Kit – carrying a First Aid Kit is a handy thing to have, you never know when or where or who might need a band-aid, painkillers, or even antihistamines!
• Cutlery Set – a handy tool to carry if you’re planning to stop for meals along your road trip. The Cutlery Set contains 24 pieces and can be conveniently stowed.

Be cautious when driving, remembering that normal road rules apply, and the police are regularly on the lookout for speeding or drink driving. Keep your eye out for children playing on the beach or near the water, and don’t drive between a fisherman and the water!

Always check tide charts (readily available from fishing shops and servos) before you travel and avoid driving on the beach two hours either side of high tide.

Keep to the hard sand below the high tide mark only as turtles and birds nest in dunes above the high tide mark and are easily crushed under the vehicle’s weight. Respecting the environment will help ensure that our beaches remain open to 4WDs for future generations to enjoy!

75 Mile Beach Road, Fraser Island, QLD

75 Mile Beach Road is a sand highway that runs the length of Fraser Island, ever popular with four-wheel drives as its one of the best coastal drives in the world!

From Indian Heads to the Maheno Shipwreck, to the Champagne Pools and Eli Creek, its full of iconic places to visit along the way! The road is open to traffic all year and has a smooth surface. The beautiful, clear blue waters will catch your eye, and the track’s sand humps and dips, as well as general sandy conditions, make for great cruising.

Dangerous currents and a large shark population mean that the beach itself is not a safe place to swim. Keep a watchful eye on the tide and don’t drive on the beach at high tide or for two hours either side of it. Keep an eye out for small streams, hidden bumps, dips, washouts, dingoes wandering along the shoreline, birdlife resting on the shore, and any light aircraft that may land! 75 Mile Beach Road is also a landing strip for light aircraft!

Cable Beach, Broome WA

22km of dazzling white, sandy beach that’s most famous for sunset camel rides, Cable Beach is also a 4WD enthusiast’s dream beach drive!

Restrictions apply during turtle nesting season between October and February.

Robe Beach, SA

A jewel in the crown of South Australia’s Limestone Coast, Robe Beach is a favourite with 4WDers.

The beach run between the historic ports of Robe and Beachport is renowned for its powder-soft sand, sharp rocks, steep dunes and tricky beach exits. It’s easy to lose the track, so grab a track brochure and fuel up at Robe before heading off.

Moreton Island, QLD

After a short 75-minute ferry trip from the Port of Brisbane, you’ll roll off the ferry and onto the world’s third largest sand island, Moreton Island!

Explore shipwrecks, war relics and freshwater lakes between some of Queensland’s best beach drives. Moreton Island is divided into five main camp zones. 420 kilometres of pure bliss. Be cautious of the tides! Traveling at low tide is ideal; avoid stopping in creek beds and travelling during high tide! Permits are required, and standard traffic laws apply!

Sandy Cape, TAS

The 12km Greenes Creek to Sandy Cape track on Tasmania’s west coast is one for experienced drivers. Travelling in convoy is essential due to the prevalence of quicksand.

Have your recovery gear ready, including a winch, and keep a constant eye on tidal movements.

Great Beach Drive, QLD

Great Beach Drive is a 380km 4WD adventure from Noosa to Hervey Bay, cruising the sandy highways of the Great Sandy National Park and K’gari (Fraser Island).

Rainbow Beach, QLD

Rainbow Beach is situated only a few hours from Brisbane, and from here, you can head up to Noosa on beaches that offer huge sand dunes, great fishing, and swimming.

North Stradbroke (Minjerribah), QLD

North Stradbroke (Minjerribah) is the world’s second largest sand island and driving is permitted along the beach from Amity Point to Point Lookout, and along Blue Lake Beach.

Stockton Beach, NSW

Known for its steep, rolling dunes and soft sand, Stockton Beach is longest beach in NSW, stretching between Newcastle and Port Stephens. Explore shipwrecks, WWII fortifications and Tin City.

Anna Bay is a place the whole family can experience, with the Tomaree National Park in the east – don’t forget your walking shoes, enjoy the perfect panoramic views! You can’t go wrong with a lifetime experience across Stockton beach to Anna Bay!

Lancelin, WA

If you’re around Perth and like dune driving, the massive, white sand dunes of Lancelin are for you! Enjoy the world-famous dunes with the crystal-clear waters of the Indian Ocean as your backdrop. Watch out for those sand boarding on the dunes also.

Cape Le Grand, WA

The 22km beach drive from Esperance’s Wylie Bay to Cape Le Grand boasts hard-packed, dazzling white sand bordered by beautiful turquoise blue water.

Ocean Beach, TAS

Ocean Beach, near Strahan, is Tasmania’s longest beach with its beautiful and rugged coastline stretching for more the 30kms, although only 15kms of which is accessible to 4WDs.

Before you leave, double-check that any outdoor accessories or attachments, such as jerry cans, storage boxes, awnings, gas cylinders, and the jockey wheel, are properly secured. You do not want any outdoor accessories falling off whilst travelling and hitting other cars, or leaving cautions on the road for others.

This month, we’re highlighting K’gari/Fraser Island, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Australia. It is 123 km long and 22 km wide at its widest point and is only accessible by boat.

K’gari boasts beautiful long stretches of sandy beaches, rainbow-coloured sands, undulating sand dunes, half of the world’s perched freshwater dune lakes, and majestic remnants of tall rainforest growing on sandy dunes. It is the only place on Earth where subtropical rainforests grow entirely on sand!

K’gari is one of the largest sand islands in the world and has been a World Heritage Site since 1992. To fully experience the island, proper planning is recommended with plenty of time allowed for your trip in order to appreciate its stunning landscapes and beautiful animals!

Wanggoolba Creek is home to the giant King Fern—a relic ancestor from about 200 million years ago, boasting the largest fronds of any fern on Earth (up to 8m long)!

The Valley of the Giants contains trees more than 1,200 years old (some with trunks that are more than 4m wide), all growing in sand.

K’gari is also home to The Maheno shipwreck. The Maheno was built in 1905 and was one of the very first steamers powered by a turbine. Originally, the ship’s regular route took her all the way from Sydney to Auckland. However, during World War One, the Maheno was commissioned as a hospital ship. After the war, the ship was towed to Japan to be scrapped, and while being towed, she was caught in a cyclonic storm. The two chains snapped, sending the Maheno crashing into Fraser Island.

Today, the wreck is slowly deteriorating thanks to the harsh, salty environment, but a visit to K’gari isn’t complete without a photo alongside the famous Maheno!
